For my first trip to Chicago I manage to see rain, sun and of course "wind"! Most of the time I was inside looking out with my "team" partner, Derek. We were reviewing Art Institute's Fashion BA and were hooked at the hip, so to speak! Derek's from London and his deep British accent commanded attention...but under it all is a big teddy bear!
Here's a picture from my room's window...since the first 3 days that was as close to the city I would be getting! Come Friday and Saturday I made up for it with trips to the Merchandise Mart - where I picked up some nea
t "carry all" totes in fun colors of turquoise and orange! Hummmmm...wonder who's colors those are? And then on to the Apparel Mart for more sample sales.
Saturday I asked the concierge if he knew of any good yarn stores. I hit the jackpot! He's a man who buys yarn for his sister in San Francisco and turned me on to a darling yarn store owned by Nina. And she had a unique way of merchandising her yearns - check out the yarn wall! What I really liked was the glass top table with pull out drawers that held all her circulars, straights and buttons! Very inventive use of space.
Loved her window...Susan, this would look great in your window! It's made of paper maiche needles and cash register tape "yarn". At the bottom of the piece on the floor was a beach ball sized "yarn ball" made of the same tape. Very cute and quite the eye catcher!

I managed to navigate the "L" train and the buses and find my way to Millennium Park, with the help of very warm and friendly Chicagoans! What a delight! Tulips everywhere! Great sculpture and visual effects too!

After taking a picture of my reflection in the "Great Bean", it was on to the Magnificent Mile with upscale stores everywhere and "Vertical Malls"! Walked and walked! and the place was packed! Went by Oprah's building on the lake - complete with doorman. Beautiful old buildings, once I got off the shopping street! Tree lined and of course more tulips. I heard it was the Mayor's wife's idea to plant tulips every spring! Must have cost the city a fortune...they change it out with different flowers for the Summer!
Enjoyed the visit, and the walking, but glad to be Home!
Great travel log Judy! I love Chicago, so much to do and see. A wonderful walking city. Loved the yarn store pictures. That glass table is wonderful. Did you find out where she got it? We need one!
ReplyDeleteJudy, that was a tremendous post! Just loved reading every bit about your trip, as well as the wonderful photos. I love that Susan shared the 'click on the photo' tip so we can see them full size. I loved the window display with that huge "yarn" and needles. Can't miss what that shop is all about, can you?! I think we need one of those :o)
