another garden I like

This one is our rental property five years after building. A help for me to gauge how things grow up.

  1. Ah, I thought I recognized those!!! Looks like it's well established after 5 years and looking beautiful. There's a wonderful, color-filled yard on Palmo (my neightborhood) and I'll have to get you photos of their place...beautiful flowering drought resistent plants.

  3. I just posted some pictures on our blog that I would like Greg to see. I had asked him to drive by our our rental property on Titus before or after we meet to talk about taking out our lawn. These pictures may give him more then he needs to know about the Titus property. They are not so much an example of what I want as what we have already done, meaning taking out the lawn and all plants for a drought tolerant landscape with the view five years later. I went by today to just get current pictures and was amazed how much had changed. I am always there, but not for viewing purposes. The city required us to submit a plan which Leslie Ryan (don't know if you know her) did for us. We decided on a drought tolerant plan back then because it just seemed like the right direction to go. Obviously it is a rental so it was not designed for our home. Never the less, I was and still am quite happy with the end result. I think it is quite nice for a rental property and so did the Mission Hills Garden folks.

We bought this 1937 Art Deco house in 1997 from the estate of the original owners who had designed and built the house. It was an untouched treasure. Nothing large, just really well designed. I am pretty sure I have told the story many times to my girls, but for the sake of Greg knowing a little more I will share. Son Tom lived there for seven years and killed off every living thing including the original Victory Garden, from the 40's. Really, it was still there when we bought it, looking like another time and place. It was obviously a huge lot and we just left it alone while Tom lived there not knowing what we would ultimately do and always thinking we had this land with potential. And a four car garage. After 9/11 for many reasons we decided to build. We hired Safdie and Rabines and they designed our twin towers. We all had this vision that really came to fruition. It was a long road, but the end result is truly amazing. They are really special three story glass houses with views of the city to die for that integrate seamlessly with the old house. We got lucky in our choice or architects. I rarely get inside them any more, but when I do I still marvel at how special they are. My manicurist of twenty years and Joe's girlfriend (one in the same) says that when we get old we can live side by side and visit when we want. Maybe even add a door. Might be a good long term plan. For now I like him close by.

One of the townhouses will be coming up for rent next month, if any of you are interested in seeing the interior let me know. This one has been occupied by two law school students, so unlike my previous tenants I am sure it will not be a designer show piece.

    Love,
    Gail
