Teaching Spencer to Paint

Today was one of those days I could only dream about. While we were having lunch Spencer announced today was the day he wanted me to teach him to paint. So.. we headed out to the studio. I explained a few basics, gave him a few suggestions about primary colors, mixing colors, when to add water and stood back. Spencer - "Gaga I just want to do it my way." Me - "Well, ok fine."  Spencer - "The jellyfishes eyes just dissapeared." Me - "well you might want to let the paint dry." Spencer - "I want to make brown." Me - "well that is the easiest thing of all, just mix all three colors, it is called making mud." Note to self, maybe teaching painting to a five year old with a medium like watercolor isn't such a hot idea. But, clean up is sure a breeze. The kids sure has ideas all his own. He said he wants me to teach him everything I know. That shouldn't be too hard.

He stuck with it for an hour. Pretty good. Then headed in to battle his animals. A little while later he came in and told me he was really bored. I asked him what he wanted to do. He said he wanted to make something sparkly. Something like jewlery. I said, that will thrill your dad and Joe rolled his eyes. I jumped up and ran in to find the Michael's beads my pals didn't love so much. He was thrilled, so we headed back out to the studio to bead. Yes, bead. He told me he wanted to make some sparkly jewlery in a picture for New York Nana, because she had no jewlery. He said she didn't even wear earrings like I do and that was because Papa buys me so much jewlery. We glued for a while. Then he spoted the real bead stash. He was smitten and I am not exagerating. Shortly after he sat down in the new plexi chairs and discovered the lampwork beads. He just kept saying "Awsome!" All in all it was an awsome day that ended up with him climbing to the top of the olive tree to wait for his very late mother. It just does not get much better.

Edited to add the best comment of the day.   "What does Papa get for buying you all that jewlery?"

  1. I think the reason you love Spencer so much is that he looks so much like Joe. Don't you think? Sounds like you had a wonderful day, indeed. Thank you for sharing it with all of us.

  2. Certainly his likeness to Joe affects me greatly. He is the spitting image of Joe at that age and also his father. But, it is his joy of life and constant desire to soak up every moment that grabs me at the heart strings. He is the little boy I never had. He knows he has my me in the palm of his hand, but I am tough. No messing with Gaga.

  3. Oh golly Gail, that is priceless! Just remember the watercolor lesson words; water paint paper. That's how I taught my boys to paint. I guess it works well unless you want to make brown, then anything goes! What a fun and very special day. Thanks for sharing it with us.
I have been so busy in my messy studio, aka "dining room in a disaster". Can't wait to tell you all about my latest adventures. Perhaps I can manage a post tomorrow or Sat. I feel out of touch :o(
    ...miss you all, Val
